What is Teeth Straightening?
Teeth straightening is a dental treatment that works by using either braces or clear aligners to carefully and gradually move your teeth into a new, straighter position and align the maligned teeth to restore functions and esthetics. Whether the patient is seeking something like a traditional type of metallic fixed braces or a removable type of Invisalign clear aligners, the dentist has various options to suit the patient's comfort, need, and pricing to suit their pocket. Both clear aligners and braces are considered effective means of treating misalignment of the top and bottom teeth.
Types of Teeth Straightening:
There are two main types of material available for teeth straightening procedures. These include fixed types of traditional metallic dental braces and removable Invisalign clear aligners.
Traditional Dental Braces:
Traditional dental braces are the devices used in orthodontics that are used to align and straighten the misaligned teeth and help in their positioning concerning a patient’s occlusion while aiming to improve dental health and esthetics. Dental braces are often used in combination with other orthodontic devices to help widen the palatal bone or jaws and to otherwise assist in shaping and contouring the teeth and jaws.
Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Invisalign clear aligners are the devices used in teeth straightening and aligning them to redefine a smile with more comfort and ease. It is a popular solution for correcting misaligned teeth and closing the gap (diastema) between the two or more teeth. The Invisalign or clear aligner is a removable appliance and is easier to use and adapt to the patient’s lifestyle. It is more comfortable for the patient to wear and can easily be removed while eating or drinking. Clear aligners give a more esthetic and comfortable teeth straightening treatment experience. It also facilitates oral measures and causes less pain as compared to fixed metallic and other orthodontic appliances. It is also more comfortable because it reduces the number and duration of appointments and requires fewer emergency visits to dental clinics.
Why is There a Need for Teeth Straightening?
Teeth straightening treatment sometimes becomes more of a need when there is a misalignment of the teeth. Misaligned teeth and an incorrect occlusion may influence more than just the esthetics and appearance of the smile. Some conditions may potentially be rectified and corrected employing a teeth straightening procedure. These conditions may include the following:
*When there are present teeth that look crooked or crowded
*When the jaw of a person makes some sounds or shifts
*When the patient encounters constant biting of the cheek or hitting the roof of the mouth
*When a person is compelled or forced to breathe through the mouth
*When the person is facing difficulty in chewing food
*When there are present some speech impediments
*When there is painful jaw or TMJ pain
*When there is present sleep apnea which is caused by snoring and breathing
*When the patient is having the habit of grinding or clenching the teeth
*When needed to cure gum disease and tooth decay
*When the person lost deciduous or baby teeth too early in life, and their permanent teeth haven’t erupted for a time period
Procedure of Getting Traditional Dental Braces
Initial Consultation and Examination:
In the first appointment with an orthodontist, the teeth should be examined manually and with the help of radiographs such as X-ray images. It is also essential to consider the patient's dental history, which will help the orthodontist guide further treatment decisions. If from the initial examination and consultation it is deemed that treatment with traditional metallic dental braces is appropriate for the patient’s situation, additional decisions will be made such as the type and material of the braces and the duration of treatment.
The Fitting of Dental Braces:
A cheek retractor is a device that is then used to ensure that the teeth remain dry and visible throughout the procedure of teeth straightening to place dental braces with more accuracy. The teeth should then be polished well, air-conditioned, and primed before the brackets are placed on them to help them to form the bonds properly. An appropriate type of dental cement is used to hold the brackets in place on the surface of the teeth in the exact position that was determined during the initial examinations and inspection. The excessive dental cement will then be removed from the tooth surface, and the bonding of the brackets to the teeth is then strengthened with the help of high-intensity light. Once the metallic dental braces are placed in a desirable position, the cheek retractor can be removed, and then dental arch wires can be put in appropriate places. The complete procedure of placement is relatively fast and typically takes less than 20-25 minutes.
Adjustment of the Dental Braces:
During this step of adjustment of dental braces, the appointments are made during which the movement of teeth and progress of procedure so far with the dental braces should be determined, which helps to make further decisions. The elastic ties are then used to hold the braces in place, and the arch wires are then removed, and new ties and wires are placed at the proper position.
Procedure of Getting Invisalign Clear Aligners:
Booking an Appointment with the Orthodontist:
The first step in getting an Invisalign treatment is a dental consultation with an orthodontist. If the patient decides to get clear or Invisalign aligners, the orthodontist will take a 3D digital scan of your patient's teeth.
Receiving Your Invisalign Aligners:
Once an orthodontist takes the digital dental scan of the teeth, they will send all the necessary information about the patient's teeth to the Invisalign aligner manufacturer. Invisalign or clear aligners are made precisely according to the shape and structure of an individual patient’s teeth. They usually take about 3- 4 weeks to be completely fabricated, and the patient will then get a numbered set of Invisalign or clear aligners to change every two weeks.
Wear the Invisalign Aligners Daily:
Now it is the patient’s responsibility to wear the Invisalign aligner daily to get the results of their choice. It is recommended for the patient to wear the Invisalign clear aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day to get the best and desired results.
